Construction of Canal @ Village Chalkewadi (Satara)

  • Jayashree’s family, consisting of four members, including a mentally challenged son and a daughter studying in the 9th class, relied on farm labour for their income.
  • Jayshree owned a total of 1 acre of land, of which 0.5 acre was cultivable. An active member of UMED Self-Help Group, with the support of a bank loan facilitated by SNS Foundation, Jayshree purchased two goats and started rearing them.
  • Traditionally, she cultivated rice and wheat, generating an annual income of 15K. Due to construction of canal by SNSF, water availability increased to 12 months. Jayshree seized this opportunity and diversified her crops and planted potatoes on 0.3 acres of agriculture land.
  • Anticipating a good yield of 2 ton of potatoes, due to sufficient water, Jayashree expects to generate an additional income of

40K from the potato crop. With this newfound income, she plans   to invest in her livelihood by purchasing two more goats.
