In 1999, the Foundation signed one of its most prestigious projects, Mother NGO for RCH, with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI. As a Mother NGO, SNSF’s Parwanoo branch, in Himachal Pradesh became responsible for building capacities of 8 community based organizations (CBOs).
The CBOs together served a population of 2 lac living in over a 100 underserved and unserved villages across Shimla, Solan, Sirmour and Kinnaur. Interventions were focused on improving key parameters of RCH. From baseline figures of 38% women attending all 3 trimester antenatal check-ups, the project ended with attendance of 85%. Post-natal check-ups rose from 10% to 90% and Child Immunization recorded encouraging trends reporting an increase to 95% from the earlier 60%. In most cases SNSF, with its team of CBOs, was able to surpass the project targets. This success can be attributed to coordination and participation of stake holders such as Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs); functionaries from Departments of Health and Integrated Child Development Programme (ICDP), government schools, mahila mandals and SHGs.
