The project titled ‘Life Enrichment’ (LE) focused on developing a ‘Life First’ culture in the corporate world as against the commonly prevalent ‘Profit First’ ethos.
A partnership between EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) conglomerate, Punj Lloyd and SNSF, the LE Program made its beginning in February 2007 in Gurugram. Under the initiative 2500 migrant workers & 200 Punj Lloyd staff engaged in the construction of Medanta, The Medicity, were made aware and responsible towards Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) issues. A cascading model of mentor, ambassador, peer coordinator and peer educator was used with Punj Lloyd staff becoming mentors and ambassadors and contractual workers playing the other two roles. The success of LE pilot phase prompted Punj Lloyd to expand the initiative to 3 more of its sites at Panipat (Haryana), Haldia (West Bengal) and Baroda (Gujarat). The 9000 workers and 600 staff across the 3 sites were engaged in the same 4-tier model between Aug 2008 and July 2010. This phase of LE also received financial sponsorship from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) routed to SNSF through Punj Lloyd. The evaluation report summarized the outcomes at Panipat, Haldia and Baroda to be:
Indicators | Baseline % | Post Intervention % |
Awareness on safety measures at workplace | 87.9 | 99 |
Daily/More than once a week briefing about workplace safety | 58 | 76 |
Reported getting safety tools without delay | 78 | 88 |
Occurrence of minor/major accidents at sites | 9 | 5 |
Safe drinking water facility at sites | 66 | 71 |
Reported sexual activity with multiple partners | 19 | 3 |
Reported sex with sex worker | 3 | 0.8 |
Learnings from the LE were presented at a IFC conference in Washington, D.C. in June 2010. Before being integrated into Punj Lloyd’s EHS policy, LE was rolled out at Paradip (Odisha), Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu) and Mangalore.
