Mr. Deep C. Anand, an alumnus of the Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, joined Chippenham College of Technology, UK, to study mechanical engineering. He also did a three-year apprenticeship with Westinghouse Brake and Signal Company, UK.

Mr. Anand’s business career began with his appointment as the plant manager at Mahindra and Mahindra, Mumbai. His responsibilities included establishing the manufacturing plant for Jeep in collaboration with American Motors, USA.

During his annual visits to the USA, Mr. Anand would identify qualified Indians and get them placed in his ever-growing list of collaborative ventures. Implanting these young post graduates in India brought about a synergy of operational approaches, creating a hitherto unseen management style.

Gabriel entered into a successful distribution arrangement with Firestone India, which bolstered its distribution strength and helped create a distinctive identity. For a short period, a similar distribution arrangement for Victor Gaskets was signed with Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co of India. These years saw the growth of the shock absorber and gasket businesses. An advertising blitz for Gabriel that Mr. Anand started in 1963, helped place the brand alongside other sectoral giant like Shell, Caltex, Firestone and Ceat over the next seven years.

The second joint venture of ANAND, Victor Gaskets Division was set up along with Victor Manufacturing and Gasket Company, Illinois, USA, a market leader (subsequently owned by Dana Corporation, USA – a Fortune 100 company)

A joint venture was inked with Purolator Products Inc., Rahway, New Jersey USA (now part of Arvin Meritor Inc., USA) for air, oil, fuel and hydraulic filter products. Despite several bureaucratic hurdles, including those pertaining to getting permission for a collaboration in the days of the ‘license raj’ as well as those stemming from corporate rivalries, this joint venture managed to see the light of the day. Several filter manufacturers from India, attempted to dissuade Purolator from signing off on the collaboration.

The automobile industry was at this time at a nascent stage with just two major passenger car manufacturers – Padmini Auto Limited and Hindustan Motors – holding sway. Mired by old technologies they only reported negligible growth. The same held true in the heavy vehicles segment, dominated by TELCO and Ashok Leyland. It required immense grit and managerial expertise to create a business that could thrive in a sector controlled by established players like Goetze, Mico and Escorts, among others.

Realizing the unique advantage offered by Purolator’s product diversity, Mr. Anand forged strategic alliances with big names like Mico for element filters, Voltas for their international harvesters and other heavy equipment and Shell, Caltex and Esso for spin-on and automotive filters.

These out-of-the-box marketing strategies put Purolator beyond the reach of existing companies, establishing it as a market leader.

Gabriel India becomes a publicly-listed company.

ANAND made inroads into 18 countries, including its collaborators for shock absorbers and piston rings. Exports started in 1968 and were limited to the Philippines, Iran and Sri Lanka. In order to institutionalise exports, 30% of the exports were made a part of the corporate philosophy and a top-down commitment began to drive this goal. Emanating from a simple belief that customers can be found if you have a good product, Mr. Anand set about building world-class facilities at competitive costs.

Spicer India is a joint venture with Dana Holding Corporation, USA manufacturing axles, drive-shafts and drive-train products.

ANAND set up a joint venture with Dana Holding Corporation, USA, a Fortune 500 company, to form Spicer India Limited, which goes on to become a leading supplier of axles, drive-shafts (also known as propeller shafts) and drive-train products as well as genuine service parts providing complete system solutions to OEMs and the aftermarket in India.

ANAND U, the corporate university of ANAND, was instituted to cover the developmental needs of the companies within the ANAND fold.

The foundation stone of ANAND Engine Bearing Product Validation Centre was laid by Mr. Dennis J. Gormley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Federal-Mogul Corporation, USA.

ANAND Farm was developed for retaining the cohesiveness among employees of the ANAND Group.

Valeo India is a joint venture with Valeo (France) for non-asbestos, solvent and lead-free clutch facings.

ANAND set up a joint venture with Valeo (France) for the manufacture of non-asbestos, solvent and lead-free clutch facings with the latest Valeo technology.

Henkel Teroson India is a joint venture with Henkel KGaA (Germany) for sealants, adhesives and coatings.

Henkel Teroson India Limited was established at Gurgaon as a joint venture between Henkel KGaA (Germany) and ANAND. Headquartered in Dusseldorf (Germany), Henkel is a global leader in the consumer and industrial businesses with well-known brands, such as Schwarzkopf and Loctite.

Arvin Exhaust India is a joint venture with Arvin Meritor Inc. (USA) for exhaust muffler assemblies, catalytic converters, instrument panel reinforcement assemblies (IPRT) and side impact beams (SIB) for doors.

The company was set up as a joint venture between ANAND and Arvin Meritor Inc. (USA), a global provider of integrated automotive systems, modules and components for OEMs and related aftermarkets.

Mando India is a joint venture with Mando Machinery Corporation (Korea) for hydraulic brake systems.

ANAND collaborated with Mando Machinery Corporation for the manufacture of state-of-the-art brake systems, strictly to Mando specifications. The Company meets all hydraulic brake requirements of Hyundai Motor India.

Behr India is a joint venture with Behr GmbH (Germany) for air conditioning and engine cooling systems.

ANAND entered into a joint venture with Behr GmbH of Germany, a world leader in automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. The objective of ANAND was to bring the best in engine cooling technology to the Indian automotive industry.

Haldex India is a joint venture with Haldex AB of Sweden for automatic brake adjusters and manual slack adjusters.

ANAND collaborated with Haldex AB of Sweden, the world’s best in auto slack adjusters and a prominent manufacturer of various air brake components. Haldex is a provider of proprietary and innovative solutions to the global vehicle industry. Haldex India goes on to become India’s leading manufacturer of manual and automatic slack adjusters.

The supervisory board of ANAND was constituted to safeguard the interests of shareholders while enhancing their value and to continually strengthen relations with the overseas partners.

MAHLE Filter Systems India is a joint venture with MAHLE Group (Germany) for automotive and industrial filters.

Purolator India became MAHLE Filter Systems India after the joint venture is formed with the MAHLE Group, Germany. Being a global leader, MAHLE ranks among the top-three systems suppliers of piston systems, cylinder components, as well as valve train, air management and liquid management systems, globally. The new company continued to manufacture automotive and industrial filtration products from India. Later, new products like cylinder head covers and intake manifolds were introduced in 2011.

Emcon Technologies India is a joint venture with Emcon Technologies (USA) for exhaust muffler assemblies, catalytic converters, instrument panel reinforcement assemblies (IPRTs) and side impact beams (SIBs) for doors.

Emcon Technologies (USA) acquired the worldwide exhaust business from Arvin Meritor (USA). A new joint venture company named as Emcon Technologies India Private Limited was hence established in India between ANAND and Emcon Technologies (USA) to manufacture the exhaust systems.

The ANAND Group diversified into the business of luxury hotels business after acquiring a stake in SUJÁN.

The Group acquired two globally acclaimed boutique luxury hotels, namely, ‘Sher Bagh’ in Ranthambhore and ‘The Serai’ in Jaisalmer. Both of these properties are accredited to the prestigious Relais and Chateaux (France).

CY Myutec India is a joint venture with CY Myutec Company, Korea for synchroniser rings.

CY Myutec Automotive India Private Limited was established as a subsidiary of CY Myutec Company (Korea) to manufacture synchroniser rings for manual transmission. The company became a major supplier of the entire range of synchroniser rings to Hyundai Motor, India.

Federal Mogul Bearings India is a joint venture with Federal Mogul Corp (USA) for bi-metal and tri-metal engine bearings, bushes, flange bearings and thrust washers in both copper-lead and aluminium-tin materials.

Gabriel Engine Bearings Division became Federal-Mogul Bearings India Limited as a part of this new joint venture. The company is a leading supplier of engine bearings to domestic OEMs and the replacement market in the automotive industry.

Emcon Technologies India is a joint venture with the Faurecia Group (France) for instrument panel reinforcement assemblies (IPRTs) and side impact beams (SIBs) for doors.

The Faurecia Group (France), a world leader in emission control technology, acquired the exhaust business from Emcon Technologies (USA) leading to a further change in the joint venture status of the Indian company. Faurecia Emission Control Technologies India Private Limited becomes the new Indian entity set up as a joint venture between ANAND and the Faurecia Group (France) to manufacture exhaust systems.

Takata India is a joint venture with Takata Corporation (Japan) for safety products, such as seat belts, airbags and steering wheels.

Takata India was set up to manufacture safety products, such as seat belts, airbags and steering wheels, for the new-generation vehicles. Takata Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo (Japan) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of automotive safety equipment like motor vehicle seat belts, airbags, steering wheels, interior trims, fabrics and child restraint systems.

Mando India Steering Systems Private Limited is a joint venture with Mando Corporation, Korea.

ANAND signed a new joint venture agreement with Mando Corporation (Korea) and acquired a stake in Mando India Steering Systems Private Limited on 29th October 2012. The collaboration was finalised between Mr. M. W. Chung, Chairman, Halla Group and Mrs. Anjali Singh, Chairperson of the ANAND supervisory board at Seoul, Korea. Mando Steering Systems India Private Limited has an existing operation in Chennai with a turnover of Rs. 6,000 million per annum. The company manufactures state-of-the-art columns supported electric power steering wheels (C-EPS) at its facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Targeting sales of Rs. 1 billion by 2016 with this new joint venture, Mando and ANAND expect to achieve major synergies in the areas of R&D and operations as well as making inroads into new customer segments, widening its customer base.

ANAND won the prestigious Golden Peacock award in the ‘Innovation Management’ category.

In an event held in London, the award was presented by the Rt. Hon. Theresa May M. P., the then Secretary of State for the Home Department, Government of the UK. The Group is recognised for enrolling and enabling innovators across the company’s functions and levels. ANAND Automotive recorded a revenue improvement of 33% due to its innovative means of conducting business.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain and ANAND Group India announced the formation of two new joint ventures.

ANAND India and Federal-Mogul Powertrain (a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation) announced that they have entered into an agreement to convert the sealings and piston rings businesses of ANAND into joint venture operations. The new joint ventures would be known as Federal-Mogul Anand Sealings India Limited and Anand I-Power Limited. Federal Mogul’s state-of-the-art technology, R&D capabilities, global customer base and technically-advanced manufacturing operations and ANAND’s access to a sizeable local customer base and supplier network, would ensure a bright future for the joint ventures.

The ANAND Group was conferred with the prestigious ‘Business Partner of the Year – Automotive Division’ award for 2015-16 by Mahindra & Mahindra at their suppliers’ meet held at Barcelona, Spain in June 2016.

This award is a coveted recognition from a valued customer. The award was given for the contribution of ANAND companies in supporting the successful launch of more than eight vehicle programmes by Mahindra & Mahindra in 2015-16. Currently, nine ANAND companies supply products to Mahindra, making it one of its top suppliers. All companies of the ANAND Group successfully met the stringent quality, cost and delivery targets of Mahindra & Mahindra. The two ANAND companies – Henkel Anand India and MAHLE Behr India – were individually awarded for their outstanding contribution in ‘Innovation’ and ‘Sustainability’, respectively. Additionally, four ANAND companies – Gabriel India, MAHLE Filter Systems India, MAHLE Behr India and Henkel Anand India – were recognised for their support in the successful launch of KUV 100 and TUV 300 vehicles of Mahindra & Mahindra.

Gabriel India Limited was felicitated with the coveted ‘Sustainability Award’ by Mahindra & Mahindra at its Annual Supplier Excellence Awards 2018 ceremony held on 9th June 2018 in Croatia.

The award ceremony was attended by Mrs. Anjali Singh (Chairperson, ANAND), Mr. Jaisal Singh (Director, ANAND supervisory board), Mr. Deepak Chopra (Group Chief Executive Officer, ANAND) and other senior dignitaries from the ANAND Group. The award was handed over by Dr. Pawan Goenka (Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra) and Mr. Hemant Sikka (President and Chief Purchase Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra).

Gabriel India received awards of appreciation from Maruti Suzuki and Yamaha Motor Company; Mando Automotive India received the ‘Mahindra Supplier Excellence Awards’ and also the ‘Best Vendor in Localisation Award’ from Hyundai Motor India. Other companies that received awards were Faurecia Clean Mobility, Spicer India, MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems, MAHLE ANAND Thermal Systems, CY Myutec ANAND and Anchemco ANAND.

Spicer India, MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems, Gabriel India, ANAND Automotive and Haldex India, have been recognised as ‘India’s Best Companies To Work For 2019’. In addition, MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems, CY Myutec ANAND, Gabriel India and Spicer India have, featured among the Top Best Workplaces for Women.

ANAND Group entered into a tri-party joint venture partnership with Joyson Safety Systems and Abhishek Group called Joyson ANAND Abhishek Safety Systems (JAAI), thus consolidating its presence in the Indian automotive safety systems segment. The JV Company has four manufacturing plants in India at Neemrana (Rajasthan), Manesar (Haryana), Pune (Maharashtra) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu).

ANAND Group announced a technological collaboration with UK-based FAR who has been pioneering design and manufacturing of lightweight structural composite solutions. The collaboration has the potential to reduce vehicle weight by around 50 %, which is critical for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Also ANAND Group announced a technological collaboration with Belgium-based Mazaro who manufactures innovative transmissions in Europe. The collaboration will help reduce energy consumption in internal combustion engines and electric vehicles by up to 18 %.

The final match of the SUJÁN Northern India Open Polo Championship 2020 was held on 23rd February 2020 at the Jaipur Polo Ground, New Delhi. The Championship was sponsored by SUJÁN, ANAND and Gabriel India. It is one of India’s most historic and premier tournaments, instituted way back in 1922, to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) to India.

ANAND announces a significant governance and key management restructuring, in keeping with the high standards of corporate governance and succession planning for which the group is well known. The Group Supervisory Board is pleased to ratify and approve the following appointments after thorough deliberations and reviews conducted over the past one year. These changes and appointments will take effect on the 15th of January 2021.

ANEVOLVE is a cleantech platform to create, design, and manufacture green technology solutions for electric mobility, as well as for other sectors. It is complementary to the ANAND Group. It was launched in January 2023 at New Delhi Auto Expo along with three partnerships with sustainable solution providers from Japan, Israel, and Britain. All the Group’s new cleantech companies come under ANEVOLVE including its first EV-focused company, ANAND Mando eMobility (AMeM), a joint venture with HL Mando of Korea that manufactures motors for two, three, and four wheelers and controllers for two and three wheelers.

ANEVOLVE inaugurated its state-of-the-art power electronics plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan on 22 March 2023. Operating under the banner “ANEVOLVE POWERTRONICS”, this facility underscores the ANEVOLVE’s commitment to sustainable industries, producing pivotal components for electric vehicles and also for non-auto sectors such as BLDC fans. In sync with the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision, especially in the strategic area of power electronics, the plant manufactures EV products such as two-wheeler chargers, three-wheeler chargers, AC chargers, motor controllers which will enhance the shift to clean mobility.

Gabriel India Limited, the flagship company of the ANAND Group, announced an alliance with Dutch-based Inalfa Roof Systems to cater to the growing demand for sunroofs in the Indian automotive sector. The newly formed entity, Inalfa Gabriel Sunroof Systems Pvt. Ltd. (IGSS), will manufacture sunroofs at a new plant near Chennai in southern India.

ANAND Group unveiled a cutting-edge engineering centre under the auspices of ANEVOLVE Headspring Engineering Centre (ANHS) in Gurugram on the 21st of July 2023. The new ANHS Centre stems from the strategic partnership inked earlier in 2023 between ANEVOLVE, ANAND Group’s and Japanese sustainable energy solutions provider, Headspring Inc. The centre is leading the charge in pioneering power electronics solutions for EVs, spanning from powertrains to chargers.

ANAND Group forged a strategic JV with Korea’s HL Group. The JV intends to double the size of ANAND’s aftermarket presence and build the Korean entity’s presence in the country.
